It's easy to assume a power bill is mostly lighting and appliances left running. In a typical Winston-Salem area house, that's not where the money actually goes, and knowing the difference changes which upgrades are worth paying for.
Where the load really sits in a Triad house
Heating and cooling account for most of a typical Winston-Salem area electric bill, not lighting, and not any single appliance most people worry about. Water heating and the refrigerator run a distant second. Lighting, even lighting left on carelessly, is usually a smaller slice than people expect. That matters because it changes where it's actually worth spending money, sealing and insulation, a properly sized HVAC system, and a service that isn't struggling to keep up do more for a bill than swapping every bulb in the house.
LED versus what it replaced
That said, LED lighting is still one of the cheapest upgrades that pays back fast, because the gap between it and what it replaced is genuinely large. An incandescent bulb turns most of the electricity it uses into heat, not light. An LED doing the same job in the same fixture uses a fraction of that and lasts years longer, which matters in fixtures that are hard to get to, recessed cans in a high ceiling, sconces on a staircase. Landscape lighting left on all night uses the same power whether anyone's looking at it or not, a timer or a dusk-to-dawn sensor gets the security and curb appeal benefit without the waste. Inside, occupancy sensors in rooms that get walked into and left lit, laundry rooms, closets, garages, are a small install that quietly stops paying for empty rooms.
What an undersized or overloaded service costs you
This is the one that's easy to miss. An electrical service that's too small for what a house actually runs doesn't show up as a clean, obvious line item, it shows up as breakers tripping under normal use, an older fuse panel someone's been working around for years, or central air that was added onto a service that was never sized for it. None of that is efficient, a system fighting its own wiring capacity isn't running the way it was designed to. Most service upgrades go to 200 amp service, and the common triggers are exactly this, adding central air or electric heat, a home addition, or updating an old fuse panel that's been outgrown. It also tends to compound, a service that's already stretched thin ages faster under that stress, and what starts as an occasional nuisance trip can become a more serious failure at the panel itself.
A quick way to tell if it's worth asking about
If more than one of the following is true, a look at the service itself is probably worth more than another round of bulb swaps: the panel is a fuse box or older breaker panel, central air or an addition was added at some point after the original wiring, or breakers trip under normal use rather than only during genuine overloads. Any one of those on its own isn't an emergency, together they're worth a conversation.
